Thanksgiving Day is celebrated in some English-speaking countries on the
last Thursday of November, which this year was the 25th. On this day, families
have a tradition which is gathering for a very special lunch or dinner. The
main dish is turkey. It is also on this day that people reflect and share with
their families what they are grateful to God for, this being the religious
reference of this celebration: thanking God for the blessings received.
Because teaching or learning a language also involves making cultural
references to the people who speak it, in English classes we did just that. We
“celebrated” Thanksgiving Day last November 25th, talking about how it is
celebrated, namely in the United States, and reflecting on what we are grateful
for. This reflection resulted in the project works carried out by our students
and that make part of the exhibition in our school's library. Some of the
students even came to the conclusion that, after all, they had more to be
grateful for than they thought they would.
O Dia de Ação de Graças celebra-se, em
alguns países de língua oficial inglesa, na última quinta-feira de novembro
que, este ano foi o dia 25. Nesta data as famílias têm como tradição e fazem
questão de reunir-se à volta da mesa, num almoço ou jantar muito especial cujo
prato principal é o peru. É também neste dia que as pessoas refletem e
partilham com a família aquilo pelo qual estão gratas a Deus, sendo esta a
referência religiosa deste dia: agradecer a Deus as bênçãos recebidas.
Porque ensinar ou aprender uma língua
implica também fazer referências culturais dos povos falantes da mesma, nas
aulas de inglês fizemos isso mesmo. “Celebrámos” o “Thanksgiving” ou Dia de
Ação de Graças no passado dia 25 de novembro, falando sobre a forma como ele é
celebrado, nomeadamente nos Estados Unidos, e refletindo sobre aquilo pelo que
estamos gratos. Desta reflexão resultaram os trabalhos realizados pelos nossos
alunos e que compõem a exposição que se encontra na biblioteca da nossa escola.
Alguns dos alunos chegaram mesmo à conclusão de que, afinal, tinham mais coisas
pelas quais estar gratos do que pensavam.
